A public notice was released on May 15th, 2024, by the Under Graduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) of the National Medical Commission (NMC), updating Foreign Medical Graduates on the prolongation of the two-year internship scheme within approved non-teaching hospitals across India. The NMC opted to push the deadline forward from May 2024 to May 2026.

Under the earlier circular published on 09.05.2023 by the UGMEB, Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) were required to complete a one-year Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship in line with NMC policies. Due to a high volume of appeals from FMGs and Medical Councils highlighting difficulties in obtaining internship slots, the NMC chose to prolong the internship timeframe to two years.

This choice assists both the councils and Foreign Medical Graduates in overcoming the obstacles associated with acquiring internships domestically. Furthermore, it supports aspiring doctors by granting them the chance to finish this vital stage of their education necessary for practicing medicine professionally in India.
