A major highlight of the summit was the conferment of Russia’s highest civilian award, the “Order of Saint Andrew the Apostle,” on Prime Minister Modi. This unprecedented achievement underscored India’s pivotal role in the bilateral relationship and Prime Minister Modi’s contribution to its deepening. The presentation of this award is a testament to the growing convergence of interests and shared aspirations between the two countries.

Moreover, during this visit, Prime Minister Modi also announced the opening of 2 new consulates in the Kazan and Ekaterinburg regions of Russia, further deepening the diplomatic ties between the two nations.

Economic Co-operation

Economic Cooperation emerged as a key focus area. Both leaders expressed their commitment to significantly enhancing bilateral trade and investment. A joint statement outlining a strategic roadmap for economic cooperation up to 2030 was adopted, identifying priority sectors for collaboration. Both sides agreed to explore new areas of cooperation such as digital economy, space, and green technologies.

Strategic Partnerships

The Summit also witnessed a renewed emphasis on security & defense. India and Russia also share a strong convergence on global issues. Both countries reiterated their commitment to multilateralism and to working together in international forums such as the United Nations, G20, BRICS, and Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). India expressed their full support to Russia’s BRICS chairship in 2024.

Cultural Exchange

Cultural and people-to-people exchange were another area of focus throughout the visit. Both sides agreed to intensify cooperation in the fields of education and science & technology. Student exchange programs, and joint research projects, will be encouraged.

The 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit has laid the foundation for a more robust and multifaceted partnership.
